The Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) was established in 2004 in Limassol. In less than 14 years of operation, the CUT has occupied high positions in three of the most well-known international ranking lists: Times Higher Education, QS and Shanghai. Specifically, in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE), the CUT is ranked 301-350 worldwide, the highest position amongst universities in Cyprus and Greece, for the years 2020, 2019 and 2018.

To become a modern and innovative university with international recognition which promotes excellence in education and research in cutting-edge fields, aiming at the scientific, technological, economic, social and cultural upgrading of our country.

Mission

To provide high-quality education and high-level training and to promote lifelong learning with modern pedagogical methods, to produce and disseminate scientific knowledge through research and teaching, and through contribution towards addressing challenges in the fields of Science and Technology, to become a catalyst for the state and society. In particular, the mission focuses on creating added value through actions on the following three axes:

Education

To establish the University as an international center of university education by offering quality and competitive programmes that reflect technological and industrial developments as well as the market needs. Addressing high-level students, it offers modern teaching associated with applied research, aiming to create employable and well-educated graduates. As a higher education institution, it also seeks to promote lifelong learning for the benefit of society.

Research, Innovation and Transfer of Know-how

The University is pioneering in the production of applied research and achieving excellence in the international research area. In order to meet the challenges of society and industry, the results of the research produced at the University are transferred as know-how to society, industry and productive organizations to create innovative solutions with significant economic, social and environmental benefits. In the context of research, innovation and entrepreneurship activities, new jobs and opportunities are created for young scientists in cutting-edge sectors.

Social contribution

The University, as a living cell of society, plays a catalytic role in the social dialogue, providing substantiated proposals for important socio-economic issues. Through the network of collaborating social actors, the University promotes synergies to promote culture, the environment, health and sport.

SHORT BIOS OF MEMBERS INVOLVED IN THE PROJECT

Antonis Theocharous

Antonis Theocharous, Project Manager

Dr Antonis Theocharous (male) is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Heraclitus Research Centre for Social Research and Regional Development. He has served as national representative for Cyprus for the Programme Committee for Social Sciences and Humanities of the EU’s Horizon and 7th Framework Programme. Dr Theocharous has also served as National Coordinator for two ESFRI projects: the European Social Survey (ESS) and the Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities (DARIAH). He also acted as a scientific coordinator for more than 30 EU or nationally funded research projects including the development of the Smart Specialisation strategy for the Republic of Cyprus. His research is interdisciplinary and focuses on deviant behaviours, crime and substance use, the links between political instability and tourism development and innovation policies as tools for regional regeneration. He has published in leading academic journals on topics such as political instability and tourism development, cross cultural examination of the impact of political instability on tourism development at the regional level, various models of tourism destination choice, and mass media depictions of various facets of political instability.

Maria Panagopoulou

Maria Panagopoulou, Project Assistant

Maria Panagopoulou worked for several consecutive years as a research associate at the Cyprus University of Technology. She participated in the implementation and management of various research programmes, which have been sponsored by the Republic of Cyprus and the European Union: 1. Provision of Psychological and Social Support to Asylum Seekers and Beneficiaries of International/Subsidiary Protection 2. Increasing Knowledge Transfer and Innovation in the Mediterranean 3. Ecotourism: New Knowledge by Innovation, New Jobs by Knowledge Transfer. She has a Bachelors’ and Masters’ degrees in Psychology.

Petros Giannoulis

Petros Giannoulis, Project Assistant

Petros Giannoulis worked for several consecutive years as a research associate at the Department of Hotel and Tourism Management at the Cyprus University of Technology. He participated in the design and implementation of a series of projects exploring contemporary social phenomena that influence the Cypriot society including: 1. Social Inclusion of Political Refugees in The Cypriot Society 2. Evaluation of the Social and Economic Impacts of Natural Disasters, Social and Political Violence on Tourism at Selected Eastern Mediterranean And Middle East Countries 3. Social, Psychological and Career Effects of Sexual Harassment in the Working Environment of Cyprus. Petros is currently a PhD candidate at the Cyprus University of Technology

Petros Kosmas

Petros Kosmas, Project Assistant

Ana Fernambuco is founder and CFO at Mapa das Ideias, has a Master Degree in Sociology and is a Member of ICOM Portugal and former Higher Education professor in Urban Sociology (at the Lusíada University) and in areas as Marketing, Psycho-sociology and Social Communication (at the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar). She has led a number of training programs for museum professionals, development of Education Services Programmes, and has also participated in the management and implementation of international cooperation projects. Ana was also the local coordinator of the state prevention program for juvenile delinquency “Escolhas” (Choices), and scientific coordinator of the Alkantara project, which aimed to fight social delinquency and social exclusion and promote social integration in the Casal Ventoso neighbourhood.
